Abstract

In every age, many artificial being have inhabitated the human imagination; animated by myth, magic and science itself, these creatures are companions of the human being, who seeks to uncover the secret mechanisms of the existence. This urge to recreate life gives rise to a whole fauna of beings of varied confection: automaton, robots, androids and cyborgs become depositories of the desires and concerns of human species. They are main characters in literature, cinema, televisión, comics and videogames, and portray at a time pleasant day dreams and frightening nightmares. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the monstrous side of artificial beings through the analysis of five iconic character in literature and cinema: Frankenstein’s “creature”, Hadaly, the “andreïde”, Maria, the robot, the “Terminator” T-800, and Rachel, the replicant in Blade Runner, are all monstrous figures threatening to emulate and surpass the human being.

Author Biography

Jesús Eduardo Oliva Abarca, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León

Professor-researcher at the Faculty of Visual Arts, UANL. He is a research professor at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León. His line of research is Cultural and Creative Industries, and his specialty is in the sociology of art and literature. He has successfully concluded funded research projects, from which scientific articles have been published in different national and international journals. He currently works as Deputy Director of the Research and Graduate Center of the Faculty of Visual Arts at UANL.
